76-year-old woman hits man on Hwy. 58

TEHACHAPI, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A man was killed Friday when he was hit along Highway 58 near the Tehachapi Boulevard exit.

The man who was later identified as 32-year-old Levi Bryant, Jr. was on foot, reportedly working on signs along the highway, according to the California Highway Patrol. Bryant was struck by a pickup driven by 76-year-old Lore Kaplan, who was driving recklessly and falling asleep at the wheel, witnesses told the CHP.

Kaplan let her pickup run onto the right shoulder area, where she hit Bryant. Kaplan's truck then collided with a vehicle parked on the right side of the highway.

Kaplan was trapped in her vehicle and suffered major injuries. After being extricated from her vehicle by the Kern County Fire Department, Kaplan was flown to an area hospital by Mercy Air Medical Helicopter.

The crash remains under investigation.
