      Bakersfield police report drop in crime rate last year

      BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) The overall crime rate in Bakersfield fell 4.9 percent last year from 2012, police said Wednesday.

      There were 10 fewer homicides, down to 24 in 2013 from 34 in 2012. Twelve of last year's homicides were gang-related, police said.

      In releasing its annual report of crime stats, police said it is focusing on fighting gang-related crime.

      Decreases were seen last year in rapes (-23.2 percent), aggravated assaults (-5.1 percent), burglaries (-7.8 percent), larceny cases (-2.8 percent) and auto thefts (-7.1 percent).

      Robberies increased 1.6 percent.
