Body found on farm northwest of Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - Homicide detectives were called out to a northwest Bakersfield farm Sunday for what they're calling a suspicious death.

Farmworkers reported finding the body of 45-year-old Todd Chance in the middle of a farm.

"Detectives responded and found an obviously deceased male," Sgt. Avery Simpson said. "It does look like foul play at this time."

Field workers located a body on the dirt extension on Noriega just east of Enos Lane, the sheriff's office sergeant said.

During their investigation detectives discovered the man's black 2011 Ford Mustang abandoned near the intersection of Tigerflower Drive and Wheatland Avenue in Bakersfield.

Marco Antonio is one of the workers who found the body. He described the man as a white male, in his early 40s.

"He was laying there, and he was shot, but I couldn't really tell if he was beat up or not," said Antonio.

Antonio said he saw a gunshot wound on the man's right arm.

The coroner will determine the official cause and time of death , but they don't believe the body was on the farm long.

Antonio also said he believes the man had only been there a few hours.

"When I got there at 6:30 in the morning, he wasn't there. When I got back after a few hours he was lying there. He was found around 9 o'clock," said Antonio.

Sheriffs officials said the investigation is ongoing.
