Boss of murdered man: 'We lost one of our team, and it's a shame'
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) Kern County Sheriff's investigators say Todd Chance left his home Sunday morning to meet a family member. He never made it to that location, and just a couple hours later his body was found with multiple gunshots and dumped in a field.
David Cotter found out Monday morning that one of his employees wouldn't make it in to work that day.
"I had to do a little work Monday morning that he did some work on Friday and when I started working on it, it just flashed me back to the conversation I had with him Friday evening before he left," said Cotter.
Friends and co-workers are still trying to figure out why Chance was killed.
"Todd was very nonaggressive, you know? Very, very likeable, low key. Didn't want to cause any kinds of problems," said Cotter.
Sheriff officials were called to a farm on Sunday morning after field workers found the man's body on the dirt extension of Noriega drive.
"It was determined that his cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and his manner of death was homicide," said Ray Pruitt of the sheriff's department.
The sheriff's department said Chance's car was found parked in a neighborhood about 20 miles away from where his body was found, near Highway 99 and Panama Lane.
"We've interviewed witnesses; we've interviewed family members and friends. But at this point, we have not been able to identify a suspect," said Pruitt.
And, until a suspect is found, friends of Chance are left to wonder what happened.
"It makes you reflect a little bit about home, when you leave in the morning make sure you're telling the people you care about, you love them and all that," said Cotter.
