BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A 39-year-old Bakersfield man was arrested early Sunday following the death of his wife.
Police said they were called around 11:30 p.m. Saturday to an apartment in the 700 block of Brundage Lane for a female victim of an assault. The woman was not breathing when officers arrived and was taken to a hospital where she later died, according to a department news release.
Investigators said the woman had been fighting with her husband before police were called. That information led to the arrest of Jorge Aceves-Cortes on suspicion of murder, spousal abuse and child endangerment.
Neighbors said they saw paramedics taking the woman on a gurney from the apartment late Saturday. They described a noticeable cut on her abdomen.
The woman was identified Sunday afternoon by coroner's investigators as 40-year-old Maria Cortes of Bakersfield.
Neighbors told Eyewitness News she had seven children and worked at a health clinic on Union Avenue where her Spanish-speaking skills were put to good use.
