Caltrans: Hwy 178 could be closed until Thursday after mudslide

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) Rain-caused rock slides through the Kern River Canyon on Monday night forced the closure Highway 178. Tuesday afternoon, Caltrans advised that it expects the highway to remain closed until at least Thursday.

Rocks and mud began spilling onto the roadway around 5 p.m. Monday, the California Highway Patrol said. By about 6, several vehicles became stuck behind large boulders and mud, prompting the closure.

Officials recommend commuters take the alternate route of Highway 155 or Mountain Road 99 to get around the closure. Highway 58 up through Walker Basin/Caliente to Havilah remains open.

Lightning-caused wildfires continue to burn hundreds of acres and threaten structures in the area, despite the heavy rainfall.

Other closures include Caliente-Bodfish Road, which was washed out from flood waters Monday, Alder Creek Road and campground, Rancheria Road, Evans Flat Campground and Oak Flat Lookout.
