Child's play may have led to toddler's death
DELANO, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A 3-year-old toddler was struck and killed in the parking lot of Vallarta Supermarket on Cecil Avenue on Saturday shortly before 2 p.m.
"When officers arrived there, they saw a 3-year-old male suffering from head trauma," said Delano police Sgt. Faustino Mendoza.
The toddler was taken to Delano Regional Medical Center, where he died a short time later.
The name of the toddler is Michael Pineda. According to one witness, the toddler was being chased by an older child. The boy ran out of the store and onto on coming traffic. The vehicle that struck Michael is a Toyota Tundra pickup.
The driver of the vehicle stopped and she was questioned by police.
"I was told that the driver felt badly ... hysterically," said Mendoza.
Parents were stunned by news of the incident.
"It's very sad. It makes me think that something like this can happen to my own children," said Javier Ontiveros as he was shopping at the supermarket on Sunday. "My prayers go out to the family."
The incident is still under investigation, but no citations were issued to the driver according to police. Funeral arrangements for Michael are pending.
