Delano Wal-Mart blessing for some, source of worry for others

DELANO, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A new Wal-Mart in Delano is just weeks away from opening, but not everyone is smiling ear-to-ear.

The mega chain buys in massive bulk, which allows it to beat most, if not all, surrounding prices. And, for many Delano business owners, that is a huge concern.

Veronica Zaccaria has owned the Peter Pan Shop for the past seven years. The clothing store for babies has been a fixture on Delano's main street for the past 67 years. Zaccaria said, "I'm a little worried about losing some business when Wal-Mart opens its doors, but I will continue to give the best quality merchandise that I can get my hands on and continue good service."

Just down the street at CM Enterprises, owner Reuben Medoza Jr.said Thursday that there is not much he can do. Reuben has been in business for the past 30 years, altering his merchandise along the way. The Delano resident said he's hopeful his T-shirt and trophy business will not be impacted.

"We're going to do business as usual, and we have our usual customers and our customers from out of town, as well," Medoza said.

But, there is no question that many local residents are excited about the Wal-Mart. Most of the store's new hires are from Delano.

New hire Jesse Heredia said he is excited about his new job.

"This will help the city of Delano grow," Heredia said. "At least all my life, I've been here and it's been growing real slow. Now, with big companies like Wal-Mart coming in, the city will grow."

The Wal-Mart grand opening is scheduled for Aug. 14.
