Mojave conference highlights economic importance of aerospace in Kern County

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) On Friday, the Antelope Valley Board of Trade held a business conference that included keynote speaker astronaut Mark Kelly.

But, behind the star speakers was a greater message of bringing business to both southeastern Kern and northern Los Angeles counties.

Inside an aircraft hanger dating back to World War II, Kelly talked about the future of space travel. He also warmed up the crowd with a little humor telling the crowd, "I come in peace."

Other conference speakers included the CEOs of Denny's Restaurants and Virgin Galactic.

Lawmakers representing Southern California spoke of the economic impacts of the aerospace industry.

Kern County brought strong representation with local lawmakers, including Sen. Jean Fuller, county Supervisor Zack Scrivener and Congressman Kevin McCarthy.

The congressman talked about history is being made in Mojave and highlighted the need to keep aerospace in California and out of other competitive states. McCarthy pointed out that keeping the industry in the region means jobs for Kern County.
