      Muffled popping sounds alert family to fire

      BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A garage fire at a home in northwest Bakersfield caused about $175,000 in damage Saturday night.


      People were home when it started, according to a Kern County fire spokesman, and they managed to get out safely after being alerted to the fire by muffled popping sounds.


      Crews were faced with a developing fire in the garage and smoke coming from the roof as they arrived just before 9:30 p.m. to the home on Mezzadro Avenue.


      A department news release said swift action by crews from both the city and county contained the fire to the garage, but there was smoke damage throughout the home.
