New businesses bringing jobs to Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) The tractors are rolling and walls are going up at the future site of a WinCo grocery store on Panama Lane in southwest Bakersfield. Soon, residents in the area will have a much shorter drive to get their groceries.

As the economy recovers, business development in this part of Bakersfield seems to be picking up steam with the potential for hundreds of new jobs.

"It's been a great market for us. We have been looking for some time to have the opportunity to open another store," said Michael Read of WinCo.

Excellent results from their store located on Rosedale Highway allowed for this new store, expected to open its doors in early February.

"Anywhere from 160 to 190 new jobs that will be hired here locally," Read said.

City planner Paul Hellman said Winco is just the first in a larger development. He also spoke with Eyewitness News about two potential plans for a new Target store that may go in at either the southwest corner or northwest corner of Panama Lane and Gosford Road.
