Police chase ends with major injury crash on Union Avenue
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) A police chase on Union Avenue late Saturday night ended with a major injury crash involving four vehicles.
Bakersfield police called off the pursuit shortly after it started. But according to a department news release, the driver of the car that officers said failed to yield kept going north on Union, driving erratically. He then ran a red light at California Avenue and crashed into three other vehicles.
All three drivers in the other vehicles were hurt and had to be transported to hospitals.
The driver who police said led them on the chase, ran from the wreckage, but was arrested and taken to a hospital for observation.
He's identified as 38-year-old Rafael Fernandez of Arvin.
The incident started around 11:19 p.m. in the 200 block of Union Avenue with what police described as a traffic enforcement stop.
