Railroad police investigating death of a pedestrian

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) A man was hit and killed by a train Monday night while walking across the tracks behind Beardsley Elementary School near Airport Drive and Roberts Lane.

"We're on scene, and it's a confirmed fatal, but this is railroad police jurisdiction," said Lt. Todd Bishop with the Kern County Sheriff's Office.

Bishop noted that in incidents such as this, suicide is always a possibility.

The incident happened around 9:45 p.m. The sheriff's office was the first agency to arrive on scene, and a deputy found the lifeless man after getting direction from the conductor on the area of impact.

While the incident will be investigated by railroad police, the body was turned over to the coroner's office, which later identified the man as 40-year-old Donald Shane Garrett.
