Son accused of killing father in northwest Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - The residents of a quiet neighborhood in northwest Bakersfield are tense after gunshots were fired from inside a family home.
A man has been arrested and is suspected of murder in the death of his father.
Police have arrested 33-year-old Geoff Edwin Murphy, who allegedly shot his father Saturday morning.
After police got to the home where the shots were fired, a woman told them her son and husband were involved in an altercation inside the house.
Murphy exited the home with a bullet wound in his upper torso.
The father, whose name has not yet been released by the coroner's office, was found on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the son could be charged with one count of murder, two counts of criminal threats and two counts of elder abuse.
"Because the victim and the reporting party are both over 65 years old, the activities that went on preceding the shooting, they're charging him with elder abuse," said police Sgt. Joe Grubbs.
Murphy is still in the hospital.
Police said at least one gun was recovered from the residence, but, because the investigation is ongoing, they will not say if there were any other firearms found at the scene, how many shots were fired or if the father shot the son before his death.
