Street painting festival enjoyed by many

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - The 15th Annual Via Arte festival at The Marketplace was a big hit with professional artists, students and the community.

The two-day event kicked off Saturday, Oct. 5, and was presented by the Bakersfield Museum of Art.

Artists paid to register a square for their art and a Via Bambino square for children was offered for $15.

The weekend also featured entertainment by professional artists and musicians, including Cuong Nguyen, Mento Buru and Fat Daddy Blues.

The festival is modeled after the Italian tradition of i Madonnari and celebrates arts in the community. The folk artists in the 16th Century became known as Modannari because they would often recreate images of Madonna during street festivals with crude materials such as chalk.

The Bakersfield Museum of Art is located downtown at 1930 R St.
