BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) A semitruck hauling an asphalt mixture overturned around 1:30 p.m. Monday on Highway 178 through the Kern River Canyon, closing the roadway in both directions.

The California Highway Patrol said the driver only had minor injuries.

The truck overturned after the driver, 36-year-old James Cummings, of Antelope Valley, allowed his rig to drift and hit the canyon wall. No other vehicles were involved, according to the CHP.

The highway remained closed until shortly before midnight.
