Leading valley fever experts spoke on the latest advancements.
Kern County is known as a hotspot for valley fever.
"You cannot walk away from this community without realizing what valley fever has affected," said McCarthy. "You know somebody, or you've been affected, by valley fever."
Experts say the number of cases for the potentially fatal disease is on the rise.
On Monday, officials announced that Bakersfield will be the site of a clinical trial, which will be authored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
McCarthy called the clinical trial a breakthrough.
"That's the start of us being able to move towards the best treatment, and moving to a vaccine," the congressman said.
Currently, there is no cure, and no vaccine for valley fever. McCarthy said he hopes this symposium helps change that.
