2 arrested in thefts of batteries from farming areas

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) The Kern County Sheriff's Office conducted an operation amid recent battery thefts in rural areas.

The rural crimes unit placed two large batteries in the farmlands near Lamont under surveillance.

The bait batteries were stolen, and Thursday the sheriff's office arrested two men as suspects following a traffic stop.

Roberto Lara de Jesus, 20, and Jonathan Ortiz-Leyva, 20, admitted to taking the batteries, the sheriff's office said.

Ortiz-Leyva was also found with a glass smoking pipe hidden in his shoe, the sheriff's office said.
