2 arrested on allegations of torturing toddler

{A href=""}BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) Police arrested a husband and wife for allegedly inflicting severe injuries on a 2-year-old boy in east Bakersfield.

Marcelino and Denice Guzman were taken into custody and charged with torture, cruelty to a child, inflecting injury upon a child and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Court documents obtained by Eyewitness News state the couple beat
young Jose Francisco Gonzales with belts, wooden sticks, open hands and fists and repeatedly burned the boy with cigarettes. The boy also suffered a broken jaw, and his skin had been burned by chemicals, according to his mother, Rebecca Valles.

Valles said she left her son in custody of relatives because she was homeless at the time. Reports say Marcelino and Denice Guzman initially told police the boy had been taken by his mother for two weeks and when he was returned to them, the boy was injured.

Police said the couple told their own children to lie to the police about what they had done to Jose.

The pair are being held on $505,000 bail each. The boy remains hospitalized.
