2 llamas fatally wounded in Ukiah pit bull attack

UKIAH, Calif. (AP) A Medocino County sheriff's deputy has shot and killed a pit bull that was one of two responsible for a fatal attack on a pair of llamas.

The llamas' owner heard the animals being set upon by the dogs in their pen outside her home Thursday night. When deputies responded to her call, one of the llamas was dead and they saw the two pit bulls preparing to charge the other, which already was wounded.

Sheriff's Capt. Kurt Smallcomb says a deputy shot one of the dogs. The other ran off, but was tracked down and turned over to animal control officials.

The surviving llama was put down by a veterinarian later due to the extent of its injuries. One of its penmates remained missing Friday.
