Man arrested in connection with hit-and-run crash that killed 3-year-old

UPDATE December 6, 2017: The Merced Police Department says an arrest has been made in the hit-and-run crash that killed a 3-year-old girl.

Police say 22-year-old Issac Maldonado was arrested Tuesday night in Modesto.

Police say Maldonado was booked into Merced County Jail for felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter.

The crash happened Monday afternoon at W 18th and "R" Street in Merced.

According to the Merced Police Department, when officers arrived on scene, they found the girl unresponsive in the road. The child was flown to an area trauma center where she later died of her injuries.

Police say the car that hit the girl fled the scene and did not stop. Police say the driver has been identified as Maldonado.

UPDATE: Police say the child killed, 3-year-old Dayveonna Polk, was walking in the crosswalk with her mother and three other children when she was hit by the vehicle. They had the right-of-way.

Lt. Jay Struble says the vehicle is a late 90s, purple Honda Accord with a raised tail fin and tinted back windows. It was originally thought it was maroon.

Lt. Struble says three officers are working on this case, looking at security and traffic camera videos.

The vehicle was seen driving through a parking lot immediately after hitting the child.



There is a candle-light vigil scheduled Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Maria's Taco Shop at 18th and R St. in Merced.

A 3-year-old girl died after police say she was hit by a car while crossing the street.

It happened Monday around 3:40 p.m. at W 18th and "R" Street in Merced.

According to the Merced Police Department, when officers arrived on scene, they found the girl unresponsive in the road. The child was flown to an area trauma center where she later died of her injuries.

Police say the car that hit the girl fled the scene and did not stop. The car is described to a Honda Accord possibly maroon in color.

Police say in surveillance video, you can see the car stop for the red light. When the light turns green, the car turns left on "R" Street, hits the child, and flees the scene.

The video below stops right before the car waiting in the intersection makes the turn.
