6 people hurt in Grapevine crash

GORMAN, Calif. (AP) Authorities say six people, including two children, were critically injured when a fatigued driver veered across lanes on a Southern California freeway and crashed into another vehicle.

The Los Angeles Times reports the crash happened Sunday evening on the Grapevine section of Interstate 5 near Gorman.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jon Staricka says an Acura SUV driven by a drowsy driver struck the center divider then veered back into lanes, striking a Honda minivan. Both vehicles crashed into a dirt embankment and were badly damaged.

There were three people in each vehicle: two children and the driver in the SUV and two adults and a teen in the minivan.

Staricka says all six were taken by helicopter to hospitals.

Los Angeles County animal control was called to care for a dog found in one of the vehicles.
