A birthday wish: 13-year-old forgoes gifts, asks for animal shelter donations
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) —
Most children are showered with gifts on their birthday, but Cadence Cardenas wanted to celebrate in a different way.
This December, for her 13th birthday, she asked family and friends to skip the gifts and give her donations for the Bakersfield SPCA.
Cardenas said she loves animals and spends a lot of time at the shelter. Her dad volunteers there, and she goes along to play with the dogs.
Her hope is that the donations bring the animals joy.
"These animals are very loving and full of happiness," she said.
Her mother, Georgette Cardenas, said this is not the first time her daughter has asked for donations instead of gifts.
"This is just amazing selflessness, I love it," she said. "Everybody called and asked 'are you sure just donations?' and I'm like 'she doesn't want any gifts.'"
