Arvin High School senior Annmarie Narvaez has received a certificate of appointment for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Narvaez will be the first Arvin High student to attend the academy.

She plays basketball for the Bears and recently earned the rank of Major in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.

"I really wanted to go but I knew it was hard to get in," said Narvaez.

She received the certificate in the mail on Saturday. "Everyone in my house was going crazy," she said. "I couldn't believe it."

Narvaez said she hopes to put her education toward a career with the FBI.

“Annmarie is a great example of a student that sets a goal and works extremely hard to achieve it," John Lunsford, Arvin High JROTC adviser, said in the news release.
