Bakersfield couple arrested, accused of insurance fraud
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) —
A Bakersfield couple has been arrested on suspicion of committing fraud, according to the California Department of Insurance.
Parneet Kaur, 34, and her husband, 46-year-old Sarabjit Singh, surrendered themselves to authorities.
In September of last year, the couple was involved in a car crash that caused damage to another car. Sarabjit initially claimed that he was driving the car and that he was an uninsured driver. A short time later, he changed his statement and said that his wife was driving the car.
Their insurance provider had to pay $11,600 to the other party.
The insurance company's claims adjuster interviewed the other people involved in the crash a short time later and found out that Sarabjit was driving the other car at the time of the accident.
The insurance company then called the Department of Insurance for an investigation into the couple, as the insurance company was suspecting the possibility of fraud.
Detectives were ultimately able to find evidence that the couple had provided a false statement to the insurance company so they would be protected from having to pay a steeper bill.
The Kern County District Attorney's Office will be prosecuting the case.
