Bakersfield pastor mourned after motorcycle crash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - Pastor David Stepp is being mourned by his Bakersfield congregation after a motorcycle crash claimed his life.

Stepp was the founding and lead pastor at Bakersfield Christian Church on Bernard Street.

The California Highway Patrol says Stepp, 61, was riding his Kawasaki motorcycle Monday on Hudson Ranch Road near Cerro Noroeste Road, near Highway 33 in the Maricopa area, when he made an unsafe turn and left the roadway. Stepp crashed down a dirt embankment.

He was riding alone in a remote area, and his crash wasn't immediately discovered. A missing person's report wasn't filed until Tuesday, and neither he nor his wrecked bike could be easily seen down the embankment from the remote roadway.

A cellphone app was used to find Stepp's location Wednesday, according to the CHP.

"It's with great sadness and heavy hearts that the Pastoral staff of Bakersfield Christian Church announce the passing of our Founding and Senior Pastor, Rev David Stepp," a church representative wrote on the BCC Facebook page. "We ask that the congregation, family and friends of our beloved Pastor to keep his wife, Pastor Letty Stepp and family in your prayers."
