The League of Dreams held its baseball opening day on Sunday at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

"Every year for baseball, we do opening ceremonies just like the major leagues do," said Jessica Mathews, the executive director for the League of Dreams.

The League of Dreams is a sports league for children with physical and developmental disabilities.

Mathews said more than 270 athletes and hundreds of volunteers, family members, and friends came out to celebrate.

"Just knowing that we have this many kids means that we are helping that many more kids get a chance to participate in sports, which normally they probably wouldn't have that chance," she said.

The teams met their coach, team mom, volunteer angel, and kids on the other teams.

The kick-off to the season also included some special guests like Kern County District 3 Supervisor Mike Maggard, Vince Fong and the Kern County Sheriff's Office Color Guard.

There was also a barbecue and bounce house.

Mathews said the first baseball game for the League of Dreams will be March 20. The public is welcome to attend.
