A Bakersfield Fire Department official said they have unverified reports from witnesses that a woman jumped out of a moving vehicle and into the Kern River.

Battalion Chief John Frando said emergency crews arrived to find the woman about waist-deep in the water just west of Coffee Road. She obeyed orders and got herself to the shore, he said.

“She seemed to be in pretty good shape,” Frando said.

He said she'll be medically evaluated. Frando was asked about the woman's state of mind but couldn't provide information.
