BHS teacher, coach killed in crash in Barstow area

Chris Avis, a teacher and coach at Bakersfield High School, is seen in a screenshot from his Facebook page. Avis was killed in a crash July 5, 2017, on Interstate 15 in the Barstow, Calif., area.

A teacher who also coached at Bakersfield High School was killed Wednesday in a crash on Interstate 15 in the Barstow area.

Chris Avis, 31, was a passenger in the single-vehicle crash, according to the San Bernardino coroner's office.

Kern High School District spokeswoman Lisa Krch said Avis was a special education teacher. He was also the junior varsity boys' basketball coach.

KHSD provided statements from the school's principal and head varsity basketball coach.

Principal David Reese said:

“Chris was a very quiet and positive teacher, coach, and person. Extremely nice and polite. Kids really respected him in the classroom and on the basketball court. He was an excellent role model and absolutely loved everything about basketball. I do not know one person who ever could say one bad thing about him.”

Coach Greg Burt said:

“I had the privilege to coach Chris in high school and then coach with him for the past several years at BHS. I don’t think as a coach we should look at each season as a success or failure. That won’t be determined until much later when each player moves on into the world and chooses their path. Chris was a success. His players loved him. He made a difference in their lives. He had the ability to bring out the best in them. He will forever be missed.”
