California's top judge gives Bakersfield school big honor
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye was at Golden Valley High on Friday morning to present the school with a Civic Learning Award of Excellence.Only three schools in California received the award.Winners were selected by a panel of experts based on the school's depth and breadth of research-based best practices in civic education."It's refreshing to see how creative educators and motivated students learn about the power of democracy," said Cantil-Sakauye in a Kern High School District news release. "These courses and programs help motivate our leaders of tomorrow."Cantil-Sakauye was accompanied at Golden Valley by Kern County Superior Court Judge Michael G. Bush. He will go on later in the day to present Centennial High School with a Civic Learning Award of Merit. Only 22 schools in California received that honor.
