The Tejon Indian Tribe received word from the Bureau of Indian Affairs on Tuesday that it was being added to the list of tribes recognized by the federal government. That list stands at more than 550 tribes.
The BIA blamed an administrative error for its failure to include the Tejon on the list.
Tribal chairwoman Kathy Morgan said the BIA's decision allows the tribe's roughly 400 members to access federal health, education and housing services.
The tribe has looked into setting up a reservation in Kern County although it has not settled on a particular property.
Morgan said the tribe has also discussed the possibility of a casino, but has not made any decisions about that.
