Coroner releases name of man who died in Kern River
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - The man who died this weekend in the fast-moving Kern River has been publicly identified by the coroner's office.
The body of 19-year-old Alfonso Bajo Tellez was found Tuesday morning in the river off Highway 178 near mile marker No. 17.
An autopsy is scheduled later this week.
Tellez was among some 30 friends on Sunday when he got pulled under.
"(The friends) actually were attempting to pull him out, at which time they just lost sight of him," Sgt. Damon McMann of the Kern County Sheriff's Office search-and-rescue unit said Monday night.
Crews searched Sunday to Tuesday, with breaks at nightfall.
Just last month, on Father's Day, another 19-year-old man identified as Roberto Dominguez drowned at the same spot.
