First New Year's babies born just after midnight

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- While many people were out partying to ring in the new year, others were celebrating in a very different way at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.

Robin Howard gave birth to her first daughter, Addison Shell at 1:37 a.m. Wednesday, making Shell the first girl born in 2014 in Bakersfield.

"My due date was January 19th, but I went into labor," Howard said.

Howard was initially scheduled for a cesarean section later on New Years' Day, but she ended up giving birth less than 24 hours beforehand.

"She came when she wanted to, that's for sure," Howard said.

Diana Diaz and Isai Gonzalez also celebrated the birth of their first child baby girl, Dayanara, just eighteen minutes later.

"She was born at 1:55 a.m. and weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces," Diaz said. "They are very happy and were so anxious to meet her."

She says the most important thing is that her baby is happy and healthy.

"It's just amazing that you created a baby. It's just like a miracle," Diaz said.

San Joaquin Community Hospital reported having three baby boys born on New Year's Day and at least one other mother was expected to deliver before the day was over.
