Police: Young girl struck by car still on life support

UPDATE: Bakersfield police on Sunday night, June 18, said this girl remains on life support.

Earlier in the afternoon, police reported the girl had died. Police now say that information was released in error.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- An 11-year-old girl is in critical condition after police say she was hit by a car in southwest Bakersfield.

Police say around 9 p.m, the girl was walking with other children at the intersection of Stockdale Highway and California Avenue when she was hit.

The driver of the car stopped after the crash, and police performed field sobriety tests on the driver and passenger in the vehicle.

Police are now trying to determine whether the girl was in the crosswalk at the time of the crash.

The girl was transported to a local hospital for treatment but she will be transported for further treatment to a hospital in Madera.

The intersection remains closed, and the investigation is ongoing.
