Horse stables threatened by Kern River bed fire

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) A brush fire in the dry Kern River bed prompted a precautionary evacuation of some horse stables Thursday afternoon.

Kern County Fire Department spokesman Corey Wilford said the fire near Manor Street and Denise Avenue threatened the stables on East Roberts Lane.

The fire sparked up around 2 p.m. and was about an acre when firefighters arrived. The fire burned both sides of the Kern River, just west of the Manor Street Bridge, and grew to 20 acres, the fire department said. Containment was expected Thursday evening.

No injuries or damaged buildings were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but arson officials are considering it suspicious. Anyone with helpful information can call the Fire Tip Hot Line at (877) FIRETIP.
