County Supervisor Leticia Perez announced the voluntary evacuation in northwest Arvin. Collins said the area is near Varsity Avenue and Mahin Drive, west of the high school.
Collins said several weeks of odd smells and investigations uncovered a broken pipeline for an oil well product. The pipeline, owned by Petro Capital Resources, has been shutdown for repair and filled with water.
In a news release Monday, Perez said, "The safety of the residents of Arvin is the utmost concern right now. Our county departments, including Public Health and fire, are handling this situation with their expertise, and I believe that it is better to be overly cautious when it comes to the health and safety of our community."
