Kidnapping case: Jury finds man guilty of attempted extortion

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - Michael Wayne Culp was found guilty Thursday of attempted extortion, three months after he and a co-defendant were acquitted of torture.

Culp and Benny Hunter were accused in an April 2012 kidnapping episode. Ofelio Victor Garcia Castrejon was reportedly taken from his McFarland home, beaten and given a phone by his abductors to call his family and tell them he would be killed if the ransom wasn't paid.

Culp was also previously acquitted of first-degree robbery.

Hunter in October pleaded no contest to a charge of threatening with intent to terrorize, and a kidnapping charge was dismissed.

Culp's sentencing is set for Dec. 12. Hunter's sentencing is set for Dec. 5.
