Life in prison for meat cleaver killing of boy
VENTURA, Calif. (AP) An ex-cabbie who killed a 6-year-old California boy with a meat cleaver and attacked two adults has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.
Ventura County prosecutors say 33-year-old Calvin Sharp killed Sev'n Molina and tried to kill the boy's mother, Sandra Ruiz, and neighbor Diane Cox in Newbury Park in 1997.
Sharp was upset because Ruiz broke off a romantic relationship and was seeing another man.
Sharp was sentenced on Wednesday.
The Ventura County Star says Sharp initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
In late 2009, he pleaded guilty by reason of insanity to first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and two special circumstances.
A judge ruled last month that Sharp was sane when he committed the crimes.
