Man accused of killing 18-year-old woman makes first court appearance

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A man was formally charged Friday with murder and resisting arrest, more than a week after his alleged victim was found dead inside a detached garage.

Eddie Rivas, 20, is due back in court next week to answer to the charges. He has a criminal record, with court records showing he was arrested in April 2011 and charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer or fireman, possessing a stolen vehicle, reckless evading of a police officer, participating in a criminal street gang and resisting arrest.

Mia Ramirez, 18, was found dead June 11 after residents in the 900 block of Vista Street, near Niles and Oswell, called the sheriff's office about a foul smell and suspicious circumstances.

Officials said the body was in a decomposed state.
