Man gets 20 years in Mettler attempted murder case

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - Steven Lujan, a man accused in a market robbery and violent confrontation with an elderly man, was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison.

Lujan pleaded no contest last month to an attempted murder charge.

Two men, one of them Lujan, robbed the Freeway Express Market in March in Mettler.

Lujan crashed a vehicle several miles away from the market after the robbery, ran from the crash, swam across a canal and then barged into a nearby home.

Lujan allegedly sexually assaulted the elderly man during the home invasion, wrestled with the man over a gun, and tried to shoot the man, though the gun malfunctioned.

Lujan then tried to steal the elderly man's truck, but the elderly man's son shot Lujan.
