Cause of death determination: Man drowns in Bakersfield canal

UPDATE: The Kern County coroner's office on Monday, June 12, reported that the postmortem examination determined this man drowned.


UPDATE: The Kern County coroner's office on Wednesday, May 24, identified this man found in the Kern Island Canal as 56-year-old Michael Joseph Brouilette.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- An unresponsive man was pulled Friday afternoon from a canal off Truxtun Avenue. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The man was spotted by city workers, who used a pole to keep him in place until emergency crews could arrive.

Police Sgt. Kevin Findley said they're trying to figure out where, when and how the man got into the canal.

Police do not suspect that foul play was involved in this incident.
