Man shot, killed in Madera robbery, suspected shooter arrested

UPDATE: Nov. 15, 2017-- The Madera County Sheriff's Office announced one man has been arrested in connection with the robbery and murder at the Tackle Box in Madera.

22-year-old Armitraj Singh Athwal of Modesto was arrested by Fresno County Sheriff Deputies near Kerman.

Athwal was arrested on unrelated charges, but the deputy recognized similarities with the suspect shown in the media coverage.

Madera County deputies were contacted and an arrest warrant was obtained, and now he will be transferred to the Madera County Department of Corrections.

Detectives continue to search for the second man.

Athwal’s vehicle was stored and will be processed for evidence.

UPDATE: November 15, 2017 12:30 p.m. - Police have identified the robbery and homicide victim as 20-year-old Dharampreet Singh Jassar.

The incident remains under investigation.

Original Story: November 14, 2017 - A gas station robbery in Madera turned deadly.

It happened around 11 p.m. Monday at the Tackle Box gas station and mini-mart on Road 26.

According to the Madera County Sheriff's Office, they received a call about a possible shooting. When deputies arrived, they found a male employee was shot and killed during an apparent robbery.

Deputies say so far the investigation has shown that two men entered the store around 10:50 p.m. The men stole cash and two large boxes of cigarettes, then fired several shots, one of which hit and killed the employee.

Deputies say one of the suspects was wearing a black jacket, gray pants, socks and no shoes with a blue bandanna over his face. He was also armed with a silver revolver. The other suspect was wearing a black "Reebok" sweatshirt, black pants, black and white shoes with a white bandanna over his face. Both suspects were wearing gloves.

Surveillance video shows that a man in a white Acura two-door vehicle pulled up to the front of the store during the robbery, then backed out and drove away. Investigators believe this man might have seen one of the suspects near the door, realized a crime was happening, and left the area.

The Madera County Sheriff's Office is asking this man to come forward with any information he may have.
