Man with switchblade shot, killed by Kern County deputies
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) A resident at an assisted-living facility was shot and killed by Kern County deputies Sunday night.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies responded to the Center Street Board and Care facility in the 2400 block of Center Street just after 8 p.m. for reports of a man standing out front with a knife.
Deputies arrived, and the man, holding an 8-inch switchblade, turned around and started walking away, according to the sheriff's office. The man then reportedly turned toward the deputies and began running at them with the knife.
The deputies then opened fire, hitting the man at least once. He was taken to Kern Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Monday afternoon, the coroner's office identified the man as 67-year-old Gregory Johnson.
The deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is being reviewed.
