Mom's boyfriend arrested in death of Cal City boy

CALIFORNIA CITY, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) A 26-year-old man has been arrested in the death of a 2-year-old boy, who the coroner's office said Thursday died of blunt-force trauma.

The boy's death was discovered Wednesday morning after he and the man were picked up by a regional transit bus outside California City.

Kern County sheriff's office spokesman Ray Pruitt said the suspect, 26-year-old Mathew Berry, is the boyfriend of the child's mother.

The county coroner's office identified the boy as Pharaoh Vanvactor.

A regional transit bus driver came across Berry with the boy along a road outside California City. The driver stopped to help Berry and Pharaoh, and Berry told the driver that Pharaoh was having medical complications and was not breathing, according to the sheriff's office.

The bus carried them to California City, where the boy was confirmed to be dead.
