More than $1.6 million raised at Bakersfield's Relay For Life
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) The citizens of Bakersfield raised more than $1.6 million for their annual Relay For Life event this weekend, according to organizers.
The American Cancer Society fundraiser is always a big day in Bakersfield - other communities in Kern County also hold Relay For Life events - and this year's version was no exception. More than 370 Relay teams consisting of thousands of walkers raised the money, thanks to help from thousands of volunteers, according to officials.
Nearly 1,800 cancer survivors participated in the Survivor's Lap to get things started Saturday morning.
Saturday night, the Luminaria ceremony featured more than 28,000 illuminated bags with names of cancer victims.
