Nintendo preview in Bakersfield: 'Mario Kart 8' is 'very Mario Kart-esque'

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) Mario and friends made their way to Bakersfield's Best Buy on Wednesday to offer a preview of Nintendo games that won't hit store shelves for months.

Some of the Central Valley's most dedicated gamers had the chance to press the start button and test drive "Mario Kart 8," as well as three other unreleased games for Nintendo Wii U: "Super Mario 3D World," "Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze" and "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD."

Best Buy general manager Brett Nelson anticipated during the afternoon that between 200 and 500 people would come to the preview event. The Bakersfield Best Buy was chosen because of it's central location in the Central Valley, he said.

"There's a lot of gamers in Bakersfield," said attendee Melinda Stumpf, "so there will probably be a bunch more people if they know about it."

Stumpf is from Bakersfield, but some of the other gamers came from farther away. The two first in line, Leigh Gray and Mckinley Ea, came from Tulare and Fresno, respectively, to demo "Mario Kart 8" for seven minutes.

"As long as I walk away with a good experience," said Gray, "I'll be happy with a 45-minute drive."

"Its fun and cool to be able to play something that hasn't come out, yet," Ea added. "It's exciting you get to tell people about it."

So what will they say?

"It's very Mario Kart-esque," said Ea. "It adds some new stuff, which makes it fun and exciting to play with family and friends."
