Sister saves young siblings from house fire
The Kern County Fire Department said it responded to a house fire Monday in the 8700 block of Hoodsport Avenue after a child lit a mattress on fire while playing with a lighter.
The fire was contained to a single bedroom, because during the evacuation of the house the door was closed.
The fire department said a 16-year-old girl was alerted of the fire by a working smoke alarm and was able to get her brothers and sisters out of the house before calling 911. There were no injuries.
Damages are estimated at around $10,000. The 6-year-old boy will be required to attend the Juvenile Fire Setter Program with a parent.
