Orphaned bear cub breaks free, bolts up tree at CALM

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) The California Living Museum closed for around four hours Saturday afternoon when a bear cub escaped and ran into the park.

The cub, which was an orphan found in Lebec, was being unloaded into the zoo when it escaped from fish and game staff.

CALM officials said the 16-pound bear ran up a tree inside the park.

The nearly 40 people visiting CALM were evacuated for about four hours while members of Fish & Game, Bakersfield Fire Department and zoo staff worked to get the bear back down.

The cub is now in a temporary home at the park while Fish & Game officials work to find a permanent place for it to stay.
