BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- Leticia Perez garnered 56.3% of the votes in Kern County for the 16th District Senate seat, but only 41.7% in the district - making Republican Andy Vidak the unofficial winner in the race to fill the seat vacated by Democrat Michael Rubio.
Vidak, a cherry grower from Hanford, captured near 52% of the vote. He needed 50% plus one vote to ensure an outright win and avoid a runoff election in July.
For Kern County, the outcome means it won't have to worry about selecting a new 5th District Supervisor. "I want to congratulate Andy Vidak on winning this hard-fought race," said Perez in a written statement Tuesday night.
The election results still need to be certified by the Secretary of State to become official. That process usually takes several weeks.
