Frank Gaskin, a union representative and business agent for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 10, said Wednesday the move came after tractor driver Joy Daniels died while on the job on Tuesday.
The 47-year-old Daniels was taken to the hospital after suffering a medical incident while operating equipment at Hanjin Shipping around 2:45 p.m.
Police say Daniels died about an hour later.
Union president Mike Villeggiante says workers agreed to stand down for 24 hours to honor Daniels and resume working around 6 p.m. Wednesday. The incident is under investigation.
Meanwhile, trucks were backed up for blocks outside the port's three major depots, many surprised by the sudden work stoppage.
